The Ultimate Student Guide to Surviving (and Loving) Your Wyoming APPE Rotation
Living in Ft. Washakie: The Basecamp
Ft. Washakie is quiet, but it has everything you need if you know where to look.
Zone Fitness: Hands down one of the best gyms you’ll find in a small town. Bring your student ID to the side building for a free membership, they have Pelotons and top-tier equipment.
Sinclair Gas Station: Within walking distance for quick snacks, coffee, pre-made meals, and medicine. Pro-tip: Be mindful of stray dogs while walking.
Wind River Trading Company: Excellent for gifts, locally crafted jewelry, postcards, and a fun free museum.
Hines Grocery: Perfect for quick daily essentials.
Mail & Logistics: Use the local Post Office to mail postcards, but never ship packages to the house or local post office. Always ship packages to your preceptor's address, if they let you.
Exploring nearby Lander & Riverton
When you need a proper grocery run, a nail salon, or a great meal, Lander and Riverton are your go-to spots.
Lander (Food, Coffee & Culture)
Coffee Hits: Grab drive-thru coffee at Lander Coffee Co. (a cute little shack) or check out White Bark Coffee and Lander Bake Shop for fresh pastries and breakfast.
Eats & Drinks: Grab outdoor breakfast at Middle Fork, enjoy burgers and pizza at Lander Bar and Grill, sip craft cocktails at Cowfish on the shared patio, or try the local Thai and Sushi spots in town.
Sweet Treats: Scream Ice Cream (connected to Lander Grill) is a must, just remember to bring cash.
Shopping & Local Events: Browse the local consignment shop for great deals on boots and activewear, and keep an eye on Facebook or ask your preceptor about Saturday farmers markets.
Must-Do Hike: Popo Agie (Pa-po-jah) Falls. Hike to five waterfalls, especially at sunset. It can be challenging if you're not used to the elevation, so bring plenty of water and take breaks. You will complain on the way up, but the view makes it completely worth it!
Riverton (Essentials & Quick Bites)
Groceries & Supplies: Plan Walmart pickup orders for days you’re scheduled in Riverton. For shipping items home, pack your box at Walmart and drop it off at ACE Hardware for UPS.
Local Eats: Grab sub sandwiches at Breadboard, pizza at Rusty Truck, Mexican food at The Depot, or coffee and lotus drinks at Pony Express and Java Java.
Self-Care: Book an appointment at the local Cosmetology School for budget-friendly gel nails or a quick haircut.
The Weekend Itinerary: Road Trips & Parks
To see Wyoming properly, try to head out of town every weekend.
WEEK 1 ─ Jackson Hole & Grand Tetons
WEEK 2 ─ Local Exploration (Lander & Popo Agie)
WEEK 3 ─ Casper Weekend Trip
WEEK 4 ─ Yellowstone, Cody & Thermopolis
WEEK 5 ─ Wrap-Up & Head Home
1. Jackson Hole & The Grand Tetons
Where to Stay: Alpine (Check out Yankee Doodle Diner while you're there).
Around Jackson: Shop at Lee’s Tee’s, sip coffee at Snake River Coffee (try the bison sausage!), drop by the historic Million Dollar Cowboy Bar (ask the bouncer for a free matchbook souvenir), and soak in Astoria Hot Springs.
Grand Teton National Park: Visit Mormon Row, the Chapel of the Transfiguration, and Jenny Lake.
Trail Riding: Book an hour-long trail ride with Swift Creek Outfitters (bring cash for a discount!).
Park Pass Tip: Standard entry is $20 per entry. Check online beforehand to see if you qualify for a pass through disability access (e.g., Celiac disease) or military status to get in free.
2. Casper
Highlights: Visit the Tates Geological Museum (free entry!), shop at Jeffree Star Cosmetics, and browse standard retail like Target.
Where to Eat: Grab wood-fired pizza at Racca’s, breakfast at Blue Bird Cafe, or classic comfort food at J’s Diner.
3. Thermopolis, Cody & Yellowstone
Road Trip Stops: Stop in Thermopolis for coffee at Jack Rabbit Java, and pull off in Meeteetse to check out the local antique shop and artisan chocolate factory.
Cody Highlights: Catch the Friday Night Rodeo, eat Italian at Sitti’s, and grab a drink at the Silver Dollar Bar.
Yellowstone National Park: Enter the park early (around 5:30 AM) to beat the crowds and spot wildlife along the Lower Loop. Always carry bear spray, check the map for key landmarks, and buy your souvenirs at the thermal basin gift shops. Ask your preceptor on which route is their favorite, we did two days in Yellowstone!
Golden Rules for a Wyoming Rotation
Fuel Up Constantly: Gas stations are few and far between across rural highways. Fill up whenever your tank drops below half. Use the Safeway card on the fridge for cheaper gas in Lander.
Pack Bear Spray: Keep it accessible, not at the bottom of your backpack, especially on early morning park drives and hikes.
Plan Grocery Runs: Schedule meal planning and Walmart pickups in Riverton around your clinic shifts so you aren't forced to rely on gas station meals late at night.
Embrace the Pace: Rotation days can be demanding, but taking time to hike, try local coffee drive-thrus, and explore small-town shops makes the weeks fly by.
Such a great rotation out west!!! WY was soooo good to us!!!
