Block 7: Getting to Wind River
Getting to Wyoming was definitely a new experience for us. We had to rent a car for the first time, and Jaden had to navigate airports alone for the first time.
Jaden: My flight was a pretty simple process. I flew from Tallahassee to Dallas and Dallas to Jackson. Dallas' airport was kind of confusing, but once I got on the tram it wasn't too bad. Flying into Jackson was beautiful!! I loved getting to fly in over the Tetons. My flight landed before Lori's so I got to spend some time (three hours) in the lobby of the airport. I spent my time reading and watching the snow. I have never seen snow like that so it was quite the experience! I left 80 degree weather and ended up in 15 degree weather so I was not dressed appropriately. If you come out in the winter make sure to LAYER.
Lori: I ended up having my flight moved back a day. Upon arriving at the Jackson Hole airport, my plane had to sit while the airport cleared snow out of the way for us to get to our spot. This airport was small but welcoming with the chamber of commerce handing out many tour guides, maps, and even free snacks. Once we were able to get our vehicle (you definitely need 4 or all wheel drive in the snow), we were able to depart the airport in a nice clean 4 runner.
We spent our first night (New Year's Eve) in Jackson and stayed at the cutest motel. It was called the Ranch Inn; the staff was very friendly and the rooms were spacious and clean. We even got to watch fireworks on the mountain from our balcony. That night we also ate at Liberty burger and went over to see the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar. This was quite a sight to see, flannels everywhere and very old west decorations!
We headed out in the car the next morning after eating at the Silver Dollar in the Wort hotel and did some shopping. The roads were covered in a light layer of snow as they had recently been plowed and overall the 2 1/2 hour trip to Smith's (aka Kroger) and then to Fort Washakie went smoothly. We met our new roommate that night after settling in!
We had Sunday to rest and prepare for our first day at the Arapahoe location of Wind River Cares clinics.
