Block 3: Weekend in Jackson

Image
Thursday:  My mom and fiancĂ© flew into town to spend a long weekend with me in Jackson Hole. Sarah Grace and I took them to Gannet Grill for a burger and look around Lander on Thursday night.  Friday: We headed over to Jackson, taking the route through Grand Teton National Park. We did a short hike near Jackson Lake and stopped by Jenny Lake for the best view of the Tetons!  Saturday: We explored downtown Jackson, did some shopping, took a ride up to the top of the ski slope, ate lunch at Palate overlooking the Elk Conservation and had an amazing dinner at Gather. At Palate, I recommend the caramelized onion grilled cheese. At Gather you have to get the crispy brussel sprouts appetizer and Logan enjoyed the pork shank. We ended our night at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar where they had live music (my mom loved it). It is surprisingly clean but very crowded.  Sunday: We went to the Jackson Art Fair where we bought some locally made jewelry and art prints. We the...

Block 3 2023: Week 2

Image
Block 3: Week 2 Hi, SG again with an update on week 2 in Wyoming.  Rotation this Week We spent Monday through Wednesday at the Ethete clinic working on some projects. We both worked up a "pain patient" to present to the practitioners. The goal of these work ups are to analyze areas of improvement for responsible and effective pain management. We also wrapped up the data collection on our H. pylori  project. Side note, the security guards at the clinic are so nice! We look forward to talking to them each day and they have helped us with local recommendations and pronunciation. They also enjoy hearing about the beach, sharks, southern states, and Forrest Gump! On Thursday we assisted at a health fair of sorts in Arapahoe. Guardians registering their children for the school year are required to have up-to-date physicals and vaccinations for their children. This presented a unique opportunity to increase access to care – Wind River Cares has a portable clinic (RV) where prov...

2023 Block 3 Week 1

Image
Monday: Day 1 We had a short drive (11 minutes) to the clinic in Ethete and started our first day of rotation. Our preceptor, Katherine, showed us around all the different pods of the clinic so we could familiarize ourselves. We met the staff at the clinic and, most importantly, ran into Ralph, one of the nurse’s cute little corgi pup! We dove in head first on day 1 with our first chart review project assessing h. pylori treatment within the 3 clinics.  Schedule: 9-4 or 8-3. We chose to come in 9-4 because we both enjoy sleeping in.  Meet the Roomies: In the evening our new roommates from UT, Jessie and Becca, arrived. Tuesday: Rodeo Girls  Our day at the clinic was comprised of working on our chart review and learning the ins and outs of the clinic’s medication processing system. We also were given the opportunity to test out the Libre 2 and Libre 3 CGM systems. We look forward to using this experience to improve our understanding of the devices and provide better patien...

Luckily, block 3 follows a week long "summer break", so my high school friend and I made a whole cross-country road trip out of my week off (shout out Sydney for keeping me company). Here is how our trip went: Saturday, 7/22: Spanish Fort, AL --> Hot Springs, AR Trip Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Peak: driving over the Mississippi River Pit: getting a speeding ticket in Lake Village, AR What we did: spent Sunday on Lake Hamilton Monday, 7/24: Hot Springs, AR --> Kansas City, MO Trip Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Peak: we stayed at a really cool hotel downtown!  Pit: not seeing Patrick Mahomes  What we did: we were only in KC for ~12 hours, so we grabbed dinner, drinks, and rode Bird scooters around town!  Tuesday, 7/25: Kansas City, MO --> Denver, CO Trip Rating: 1 out of 5 stars (horribly boring, same intersta...
