The House & The Clinic: Block 3

 Hello again everyone,

Its Madison again! At this point Mackenzie and I are 2 weeks into our rotation and having a great time! I did want to take a moment to provide more details on the house and the clinic where we are working!

The house: The house is 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, with two of the bedrooms have 2 twin beds, and the other bedroom having one twin bed. Additionally, all of the rooms have dresser(s) as well as closets pre stocked with hangers. While it is not luxury accommodations, the house is perfectly livable and has pretty much everything you need in regard to kitchen supplies, towels, pillows, and bedding, but you can 100% bring your own as well. Mackenzie and I both elected to bring our own bedding, pillow, and towels just based on personal preference. Additionally Mackenzie brought her own coffee pot and air fryer, but both of these appliances are already provided for you along with a microwave, a toaster, a blender, and a crock pot. One thing you could bring that would be beneficial is a Roku or similar device as their is a TV in the living room but it is not a smart TV and can only be used to view DVDs. My main piece of advice is to be prepared to clean when you arrive! Past students had left the place in not the best shape so we both cleaned upon arrival, including clearing out the fridge and cabinets of old food. There are cleaning supplies at the house already but you may want to bring more/ get more upon arrival. The house is about 15 minutes from the SafeWay in Lander which is where Mackenzie and I have purchased all necessities (I would say it is very comparable to a Kroger!). If you need anything outside of the realm of groceries and cleaning items, there is a Walmart in Riverton which is about 30 minutes from the house!

**Disclaimer: Changes may be made to the house after we leave so somethings may change, but Katherine (the preceptor) will send you detailed information regarding the home as well!

The clinic: The clinic is about 10 minutes from the house in Ethete (E- thuh- tee), and services the Norther Arapahoe and Eastern Shoshone tribes who reside on this reservation. There are also two sister clinics in Arapahoe and Riverton that you may go to sometimes. Our hours are 9-4 everyday with an hour for lunch, and the dress code is business casual (you can wear jeans on Fridays!). The pharmacy is located within the clinic so in addition to standard out-patient dispensing, there is a lot of collaborative practice with the physicians. In our first two weeks we have learned a lot, but our experience has been slightly different than the norm as the clinic is currently changing over their EHR system, so everyone is learning as we go! We have gained experience performing med recs, working on a diabetes care audit (analyzing prescribers diabetes patients to see how many are controlled or not and make recommendations for those who are not), and we were even able to apply Freestyle and Dexcom sensors to ourselves so we can have first hand experience wearing them to allow us to provide better patient counseling! Katherine and the other pharmacists here are very flexible with days off to go explore, and allowing you to tailor this experience to what you want to learn! Overall I believe this experience is what you make it, so be sure to learn all you can at clinic and use your off time to explore the beautiful state of Wyoming!!

With much more to come,

Madison
