Block 5 Post 4

Week 5:

This was our last and final week at the Arapaho clinic in Wyoming. Our preceptor was very generous and let us finish up early this week, because Thursday was Veterans’ Day (a government holiday) and she knew we had a long drive. Be sure to communicate any and all travel plans up front at the beginning of the rotations and the preceptors are very flexible to accommodate.

In addition to our typical day-to-day activities, this week we completed an antimicrobial stewardship project for the MDs at the hospital, as a quick reference guide for common antibiotics used at their practice site.

One night this week our preceptor Dr. Katherine Baker invited us over to her home for elk taco dinner that her fiance (a big elk hunter) fixed for us. This was my first time having elk and it was so good! So try lots of new food and wild game while out West!

One night we treated ourselves to some last minute shopping in Lander. We spent a lot of time at Alchemy, an art cooperative right next to Lander bar.

In preparation for the long drive back, we also made sure to get Nina’s oil change before we left. You will put some miles on your car so just be prepared for that!

Drive Back to AL:

The first night of our long journey back to the South we drove to Denver, and stayed the night with Nina’s friend and had dinner and breakfast before continuing our journey.

We took a not-so-direct route and made a pit stop in Still Water, OH to visit, eat dinner, and catch up with one of Ada’s family friends who is in Vet school at OSU that I also happen to know from Auburn.

After this long drive and quick break we were antsy to get back home as quickly as possible, so we made a game time decision and drove through the night only stopping for gas, coffee, and bathroom breaks. All in all, our journey back to the South only took two days to go from Arapahoe, WY to Huntsville, AL. So, a short drive is doable if you share the driving burden. However, there are many different routes to take, and there are lots of ways to break up the drive. This is just what worked for us.

We were able to make the most of our long time in the car together, and some of us even participated in virtual residency showcases from the comfort of our car thanks to our phone’s hot spots!
