Arapahoe Clinic - Weeks 1&2
Autumn, Lauren, and I spent the first day of rotation getting our bearings for the building and meeting all the friendly pharmacy staff that we will be working with for the next 5 weeks. The first few days consisted of working the COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic on-site and even a special clinic at a nearby park in Riverton! The clinic built an outside garage dedicated to testing and vaccinations to minimize exposure to staff and other patients in the clinic.
Once each of us received access to the EHR and ScriptPro, we were able to start charting for patients and begin projects assigned to us by our preceptor, Dr. Katherine Baker. The main project we are working on now involves medication reconciliation to ensure patient's medication profiles in the EHR match with what is actively filled on the ScriptPro. We have been able to help in other ways around the clinic by researching and answering questions for both pharmacists and providers, participating in bi-weekly pain management meetings, and counseling patients.
When we weren't working directly in the clinic with the nurses to provide immunizations and testing for patients, we assisted inside by drawing up the vaccines. Pfizer vials we had to retrieve from the "ultra-cold freezer" and dilute with normal saline to prepare them for administration.
One morning, we helped out our optometry roommate, Maria, practice some of her skills in the optometry office! Autumn and I had our eyelids flipped, while Lauren had her eyes numbed and a Gonioscopy performed (don't worry, the numbing wore off after 15 minutes). Maria took some time to teach us about the purpose of the skills she was performing and the different parts of the eye.
